Recipe: Flavorsome, Wholesome and Awesome Bolognese


Bolognese is our weekly go to meal. It is flavoursome, wholesome and awesome! My bolognese always has two different meats (sometimes, three) because I believe it gives the meal a real depth of flavour which will blow your mind.

Instead of buying pasta sauce, I make my own.

The flavour of the bolognese will develop over time and if you make the quantity as stated in my recipe, you will be able to feed 12 people! Yes, this is also a great meal to put in the freezer for another time.

If you would like to try our flavoursome, wholesome and awesome dinner of pasta bolognese, here is the recipe:

Beef & Lamb Bolognese - serves 12

The sauce
2 jars of 700g sugo tomato (home brand will do)
2 large brown onions, chopped finely
8 garlic cloves, chopped finely
8 anchovies in oil
3 celery sticks, chopped finely
3 carrots, chopped finely
1 tin of lentils, drained of water
500g of over-ripe tomatoes, chopped up
2 tbsps dried mixed herbs
Olive oil
salt and pepper to taste


The meat
800g lean mince beef
400g mince lamb
Olive Oil



Making the sauce:
1. In a large pot over medium high heat, add olive oil. Brown the onions for 3 minutes or until soft. Add garlic, celery and carrot. Cook until you smell the fragrance of the garlic. Add all the remaining ingredients and cook on high for 5 minutes. Simmer on low for 45 minutes with the lid covering half the pot.

Cooking the meats:
1. In a separate deep pan over high heat, add olive oil. Brown the meats and break it up as you cook so that does not form large clumps. This quantity of meat will take 20 minutes to cook.

Putting the meal together:
1. Once the sauce has its cooking time of 45 minutes, add your cooked meats to the pot of sauce and stir well. Let it simmer for 15 minutes. Viola! It's done.
